What Walking Has Taught Me About Winning

What Walking Has Taught Me About Winning

I compete with a good friend of mine every month to see who walks the most miles.

We joke. We post screenshots. We talk trash. Other people get laughs from it as well.
But here’s the truth: the competition isn’t about bragging rights.

It’s about accountability.

When people are watching you—whether it’s your friends, your walking club, or your kid—you’re more likely to show up. Not just for them. But for you.

Now that the Walking Club has grown, people depend on me to set it up.
Some won’t walk at all if we don’t do it together. That’s a weight I carry with honor. Because I know what’s on the other side of walking together:

  • Elevated conversations

  • Mental clarity

  • Confidence

  • Consistency

When we move, we think better. We talk better. We process life on a deeper level.

So how do you start?

Live at the point of execution.
That means: don’t make it hard for yourself to win.
Put your walking shoes by the door. Lay out your clothes. Keep headphones nearby. Whatever you need—set it up in advance. That way, you’re always a step away from action.

And if you want to build consistency? Think marbles and sand.

If you fill a jar with sand first, there’s no room for the marbles. But if you drop the marbles in first—the big priorities—you’ll find that the sand fills in around them.

Walking is a marble in my life. I don’t find time for it. I build everything else around it.

You can do the same.
